What’s in a Name?

What’s in a name? It takes a bit of time, thought, patience, and maybe some creativity to name a business. So how did Fishing With Captain Kirk LLC come into being?

Years ago when I was considering becoming United States Coast Guard licensed captain so I could be called Captain Kirk and take people fishing, I began to think of possible names for my new adventure company. My first thought was to be called Captain Kirk’s Half Assed Guide Service. So what’s in that name? My slogan for the above name was to be “Half The Fish, Twice The FUN!”. I thought that was pretty creative and funny. However, using the words “Half Assed” might offend some people and I don’t want to do that. I have plenty of other ways in which I might offend someone. Let’s not start with that first thing.

I like the “half the fish, twice the fun!” line. This way I take pressure off myself about catching fish and having my clients catch fish. If that’s all you want to do is “catch”, then I’m not the service for you. I’m part time. I’m into it. I really love fishing. I want you to catch fish, I believe we are going to catch fish.  I just don’t want the pressure. I’d rather you’d focus on the joy of being out there and fishing with someone who has experience and all the stuff needed for a successful catching opportunity.

I’ve also know guides that really aren’t that fun. They are so serious and so bent on getting fish in the boat they forget about enjoying the moment.  It’s your trip, what do you want? I hope to provide safe, fun, and fish.

So I did away with Captain Kirk’s Half Assed Guide Service as a name choice. Fishing Guide Wisconsin could have been a business name. However, I don’t really guide all over the state. It was a good name for people to find me online though. So that’s what I chose as a web address. I’d be happy to fish anywhere in the state of Wisconsin and be more of a fishing partner than a guide. Maybe you just want to fish with someone with some knowledge of fishing. Then yes, I’m Fishing Guide Wisconsin.

Winnebago Waters Guide Fishing & More. I like that choice as a business name. I like guiding on the Winnebago System. I do more than just the Winnebago System. So yes, it would have worked. I just think that people will remember Captain Kirk over anything else. And who wouldn’t want to fish with Captain Kirk? Am I allowed to name my boat the Enterprise?
