It’s June and the Winnebago Bite is ON!
The bite is on on Lake Winnebago. If you like action, we’ve had a lot of it. Half days have been producing 40 or more fish. That’s nuts. That’s about twice what I usually expect in a half day.
Now we aren’t catching all walleyes. We are getting some nice ones and some limits. We’ve also been a catching a lot of white bass, a few white drum, and a few small small mouth bass.
What do I typically expect when I’m guiding people during the summer months. Well, I expect it to get hot out there. Wear light clothes that will protect you from the sun.
Sorry, I got distracted. I expect to put 20 fish in the boat for a 1/2 day and 30 fish for one of my full day trips. Any more action than that becomes a great day of catching. The best day last season was 71 fish in the boat.
The way I’ve been catching a bunch of fish has been to fish shallow water. Fishing shallow rocks to be more specific. I’ll have you cast jigs with plastics or crawlers and swim or drag them back to the boat.
Lake Winnebago is a fish factory. And in order to keep it that way, we don’t keep any walleyes over 19 inches.
There are good numbers of eater size walleyes in the system. Sure, it’s fishing and sometimes the bite just isn’t happening. So if that’s the case you can always eat white bass. No limit for size or numbers on those. White drum can also be eaten. They are often given a bad rap by people who have never eaten them. They are pretty good and I can put them side by side with walleye and most people won’t be able to tell the difference.
You can also keep and eat small mouth bass and/or catfish. And if you need someone to clean your fish, I know a guy, but keep the catfish to yourself.
