Winnebago Walleye
Lake Winnebago Is a GREAT Fishery!
My memory of Lake Winnebago goes way back to my childhood. I’d have to say that most of my memories were not pleasant. Yes, you read that right, not pleasant.
As you may or may not know, Lake Winnebago is over 30 miles long and over 10 miles across at it’s widest point. It encompasses 137,700 acres and has 88 miles of shoreline. It’s also a very shallow lake for its size. The deepest spot is just 21 feet.
Depending on where you are on the lake and which way the wind is blowing will determine the size of the waves. Lake Winnebago can get nasty really fast. I know a friend who ended up staying on the lake overnight in a swamped boat. Fortunately he and his son were rescued.
This brings me to why my first memories of the lake aren’t pleasant. I suffer from this thing called motion sickness. Ever have it? Sucks rocks! So here I am a fishing guide who gets motion sick. Yep, I’m cursed from the beginning.
My dad took me out on Lake Winnebago numerous times when I was a child. Most of the time I’d be curled up in a seat hoping not to puke. I hate puking. No, really, I hate puking. I do everything I can to avoid puking. I felt horrible and wanted to go in and I also didn’t want my time fishing with my dad to be over. None the less, getting sick often on the boat on Winnebago was a bad experience.
Push all that aside. Fast forward 30 years and I’m all grown up, addicted to fishing and a Lake Winnebago boat landing is just 1.5 miles from my house. I need to get out there! If you get motion sick we’ll get along just fine. I hate being rocked all over when I’m trying to catch fish. And getting sick is not an option. OTC meds help a lot if you need them. Please take something at least one hour before going out there. Or be like me and only play along when the wind cooperates.
Lake Winnebago is a great fishery. It’s definitely worth getting out there and figuring it out. I’m not much for trolling. I know it’s a great way to put fish in the boat. I’d rather catch less fish and feel the HIT than to troll for walleyes. Casting jigs in the shallows, dragging jigs across the reefs, or even vertical jigging is what I enjoy doing and teaching.
