May is here! The trees are budding. The white bass are biting! Spring has sprung. Get on the water before it’s done.
It’s time to get on the water and catch some white bass before the run is over. The white bass action does vary daily. Some days are great. Some days are amazing. And some days are just like fishing.
The river is still flooded and there is a “No Wake” on the entire river. Fremont has been the hot spot lately. The bite might remain good for a week or two yet. Then the white bass will take a trip back into the Winnebago lakes.
You do not have to fish on top of each other. There are plenty of fish and plenty of spots. If you choose to anchor, don’t stay on an inactive spot for more than 20 minutes. The school is scattered, picked over or has moved on.
When the bite is tough I enjoy drifting the current and vertical jigging to find active fish. 1/4 ounce jigs with 3 inch Gulp! minnows are great choices. The color of the jig doesn’t seem to matter to white bass. I like to fish with 6lb test line.
If you anchor the boat you can cast jigs and Gulp or use a three way rig (Wolf River Rig) with a fly or flies attached. Cast out, drag, jig, or rip the rig back to the boat. Favorite colors are purple, purple/pink, and purple/red. I think flies that have a piece of reflective mylar make the fly more effective. And, yes other colors work. And NO, you do not have to put bait on the hook.
